Did you recently discover that you like crocheting? Set yourself up for success, and less frustration as you dive into your crochet journey! Everyone is different, but here is a list of recommended basic crochet supplies that every new crocheter should have.

Basic Supplies:

  • Hooks – different size hooks depending on the project
  • Yarn – the yarn you plan to use for a project
  • Stitch Markers – excellent way to mark stitches for counting or progress points
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry/Darning needles – for weaving in ends

Optional supplies that help with more complicated projects:

  • Row counter (app or physical counter)
  • Needle threader
  • Small Bin or bag to keep yarn bits and scrap yarn
  • Blocking mats
  • Soft tape measure
  • Yarn ball winder
  • Fabric pins
  • Poly-fill stuffing (for amigurumi and pillows etc)
  • Pattern books
  • Crochet storage/organizers
  • Crochet finger ring to help hold the yarn and prevent yarn burn

When I first learned to crochet, I only had hooks, yarn, and scissors. That’s the absolute basic necessity to start crochet. I wasn’t doing any complicated crochet work because I was learning solely how to make blankets. As I learned more, stitch markers and darning needles were my next purchase. With so many distractions, I was using scrap yarn to mark my places but they just weren’t working out for me because they kept falling out when I was moving my project around. So why not make your life easier right? Stitch markers are very helpful to use if you get easily distracted and they also help with projects that have a ton of stitches to keep track of.

Darning needles (can also be called tapestry needles) have rounded and blunt tips. The eye of the needles are much larger too. There is less snagging of fibers and they easily pass through stitches.

Then came storage options, pattern books, stuffing, blocking mats and a ball winder. Keep in mind that this is only my experience because your journey could look a lot different depending on what crochet items you like to make and your budget.

Don’t be afraid to experiment because you may stumble upon some great crochet hacks! There are lots of supplies out there for crochet but the best ones are what works specifically for you!
