Store Those Scraps
First of all, let’s keep everything neat and tidy shall we? Designate a container, bag, or make your own (you crochet after all!) to hold your scraps of yarn to use later. It will keep your workspace less cluttered and you’ll be able to focus more on your current WIPs.
If you really want to get organized, it’s not unheard of to store scraps by yarn type, color, or weight. Doing this would require the use of separate containers but you’ll be able to find what you are looking for if you are looking for a specific type of scrap or color to use in projects using yarn scraps.Â
Mix It In
I love taking my tiny yarn scraps and mixing it in with polyfill when I make amigurumi or any other small item that requires stuffing. Not only does it save on the amount of polyfill you use, but you reduce the amount of waste you create from your projects. That’s a win!
Use It Up
There are lots of projects you can make with yarn scraps! Obviously it depends on how long your scraps are, but here are some ideas to try when you have a pretty good scrap pile going:
- Mini pompoms – Decorative pom poms are great for key chains, gift toppers, garlands, or hats
- Scrap blanket or scarf – Get creative and work scraps into a patchwork blanket or scarf
- Bookmarks – Weave, braid, or tassel the yarn scraps to add to or make into simple bookmarks
- Plant hangers – Create small macramé hangers for plants or propagation jars
- Bird nesting material – In spring using only natural fibers about 4-6” long, place colorful yarn scraps outside for birds to use in nests
- Mug cozies – coffee cup sleeves that are quick and easy to make
- Embellish other projects – Add embroidery details to finished items
- Yarn-wrapped containers – Transform glass jars, tin cans, or other containers into colorful storage options
- Tassels for home decor – Decorative tassels for pillows, curtains, or bags
- Finger-knit jewelry – Create bracelets, necklaces, or rings
- Scrap yarn gift tags – Wrap or weave around card stock for unique gift labels

Donate It All
If you have extra bits of yarn or small rolls you don’t plan on using anymore, you can donate yarn to local organizations or schools (check with your local organizations and schools first to see if they will accept it). Also check with senior centers or crafting groups! You never know who would like some useful yarn!
Trade It
Trade with other members of the crafting community! If you have some extra yarn that you used for a project and don’t plan to use any more of it, see if you can swap with someone else!
Better Yarn Disposal Options
For yarn that just cannot be used again, some crafters have composted their natural fibers. You can also see if there are any textile recycling programs in your area that could take the scraps.Â
Fiber arts always create yarn scraps, there is just no way around it. No matter how much scrap yarn you have, I hope these are some ideas you can try. Finding creative ways to use yarn scraps makes me feel better about using up as much yarn as I can possibly use and not having much to go to waste.Â
